Suzanne Meyer-Zundel (1882–1971) was a French poet and writer whose life and literary output were deeply interconnected with her enduring bond with
Judith Gautier, the prominent author, Sinologist, and daughter of the famous Romantic poet Théophile Gautier.
During the early 20th century, Meyer-Zundel formed a close relationship with Judith Gautier, serving as her companion and partner for roughly fifteen years until Gautier's death in 1917. Their long-term artistic and personal partnership represents a notable chapter in early 20th-century French LGBTQ history, embedded within the vibrant artistic and literary circles of Paris.
Throughout their years together, Meyer-Zundel actively participated in literary creative work. She composed the poetry collection Les Psychosophiques and, in 1920, published La Gloire de l'illusion (The Glory of Illusion), a poetry collection dedicated entirely as a loving tribute to Judith Gautier. Literary scholar Martine Lavaud has highlighted the emotional weight of this memorial work, noting that despite occasional awkwardness in phrasing, the collection contains flashes of genuine poetic brilliance and an earnest sincerity that elevates the verse.
Following Gautier's passing in 1917, Meyer-Zundel was named her sole heir. She inherited Gautier's Parisian residence on the rue de Washington, where she lived for years while managing and preserving her late partner's estate and literary legacy.
Suzanne Meyer-Zundel died on February 21, 1971, in Dinard, Brittany. In accordance with her wishes, she was buried alongside Judith Gautier in a shared grave at the Saint-Énogat cemetery. Resting beneath a granite slab inscribed with a Chinese epitaph reading "The light of heaven arrives"—an inscription Meyer-Zundel personally arranged at the time of Gautier's burial—the shared tomb stands as a permanent memorial to their lifelong bond and shared aesthetic legacy.
